Candida Baker

Welcome to my website, which reflects all of the many passions in my life.

For the past 30 years I have been lucky enough to live and work in Australia in some of the best creative jobs available – as an author, editor, journalist, photo-journalist and most recently, festival director.  I have worked as a journalist for numerous publications in positions such as editor of The Weekend Australian Magazine, deputy editor of the Good Weekend Magazine, arts editor of the Sydney Morning Herald and a Sydney-based feature writer for seven years for The Age.

For the past year I have been director of the Northern Rivers Writers’ Centre and the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival for 2011, which culminated in a fabulous event in the first weekend of August.  Our Keynote speaker, John Pilger, remarked that he was: “delighted and impressed…your festival was at least as vibrant as the best of Hay-on-Wye.  The level of debate was extraordinarily high.  I felt proud to be back in Australia.”

I am the author of numerous books and have edited many anthologies.  My latest books are The Infinite Magic of Horses (2009), The Wonderful World of Dogs (2010), and The Amazing Life of Cats (October 2011), all published by Allen & Unwin’s Inspired Living Imprint.  Beautiful Women, an anthology of stories for/by and about women will be published in April 2012.  I am also working on my third novel.

I have always loved, and been involved in the arts generally, and one of my on-going passions is photography.  My own photographs featured in my second novel, The Hidden, and in various animal anthologies.  I love to photograph the natural world, and using camera movement I have captured photographs showing the essence of the energy in the world around us.  I have created art works on commission and been in several group exhibitions.

I grew up in the country in England and became addicted to horses at the age of five when my father first read Black Beauty to me.  The obsession remains, and over the past ten years I have made an in-depth study of natural horsemanship.  I have bred and started my own horses, re-trained horses and rescued horses.

In these pages you will find more information on all the passions and hobbies in my life.  Enjoy!
